Why
Should I
adopt a pet?
Considering adoption is an important part of welcoming a pet into your life. Finding a pet that will suit your lifestyle can be easier when adopting from a shelter. If you want an older pet, this will be a great place to start, but there are many puppies at the shelter to choose from as well.

How do I adopt a pet?
The first step is to fill out the adoption application here on our website. Once it’s filled out, we will contact you regarding your application. If you are approved, we will then schedule a meet and greet as well as a home check. During the home check, once approved, you will be given the option to adopt.
-
Are there any adoption requirements?
We are flexible with the families that we adopt to. However, we want to ensure that each pet goes to the best home possible and is a great match for your lifestyle. Certain pets may have specific requirements. For example, a dog or cat may be required to go to a home with no other pets or no young children. Also, please be advised that we do not adopt out to people who are at, or over, the city limit of allowed pets for their area.
-
How to avoid picking the wrong pet?
When looking for a pet, remember to not only focus on certain breeds and particular looks, but rather seek personality traits and energy levels that go well with your lifestyle. Filling out the adoption application and going through our process will help eliminate many issues. Keep in mind that if you realize your new pet is not a good fit for you, we will take them back. Please be advised that the adoption fee is non refundable.

Vet Q&A: Are pets for adoption healthy?
All the animals that come through our rescue are given a clean bill of health. Our goal is to do our best to make sure they are as healthy as possible, however it is impossible to make any guarantees. Some animals are great at hiding illnesses and sometimes issues may sadly arise after adoption. At Hank’s Legacy, we provide you with complete medical records for each animal when you adopt. To see what each animal is vetted for, check out the adoption fee page for more details.

What areas do you adopt to?
While our main adoption area is Southern California, we may be able to accommodate requests for other areas and states. This will depend on the availability for someone in that area to complete a home check. Once the home check is completed, the adopter will be responsible for any travel costs, and must travel to Los Angeles to pick up their new pet.
